July 25, 1938
In the LIFE online archive this photo is labeled “Baseball - Cleveland Indians, July 1938.” With the help of Baseball Almanac and the scoreboard on the not-so Green Monster we can ID the action as taking place during the first game of a doubleheader played on July 25, 1938. Cleveland’s catcher is Frankie Pytlak. Umpire Eddie Rommel is indicating a run has just scored. Who’s the guy sliding across the plate? Well, the box score shows three Red Sox scored in the game. We can eliminate Jimmie Foxx, though, because his run came via a solo home run in the 7th. That leaves Joe Cronin or Pinky Higgins. I’ve seen plenty of photos of Joe Cronin in my day, and that isn’t Joe Cronin’s chin. So this has to be a photo of Pinky Higgins scoring in the 5th inning of a 4-0 Red Sox win. Cue the Standells.
